What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gradually worsens over time. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is not yet fully understood. It was estimated that 60–70% of dementia cases are a result of Alzheimer’s.

What are the key symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease has early and advanced symptoms like:

  1. Difficulty in remembering recent events. (Early symptom)
  2. Behavioral issues.
  3. Problems with language
  4. Loss of motivation
  5. Mood swings
  6. Self-neglect and disorientation

What is the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a result of two protein development in the brain. The first protein “amyloid” accumulates forming plaques around brain cells. The second protein “tau” deposition forms tangles within brain cells.

An older hypothesis is known as the cholinergic hypothesis proposes that the development of Alzheimer’s disease is due to a reduction in the synthesis of acetylcholine.

Does Alzheimer’s disease have a good prognosis?

Following diagnosis, life expectancy is expected to range from three to ten years. During the mild cognitive impairment stage, the patient suffers from memory problems. Despite that, the patent still does not need help from others. on the other hand, in the dementia stage, the patient starts to find it hard to carry out activities alone.
