Moleculin’s molecule WP1122 reduced SARS-CoV by 100% in Lab
It was found that glycoproteins play a vital role in the ability of coronavirus to infect host cells and to replicate. This fact was an eye-opener for researchers to investigate the efficacy of some potential molecules like WP1122. Independent research that was held by the Institute of Biochemistry II – Goethe-Universität Frankfurt in Germany recently announced their discovery that 2-DG, the active compound in WP1122, reduced in vitro replication of SARS-CoV-2 by 100%. Moreover, Bojkova, D et al, from Frankfurt, Germany claimed in an unreviewed published article that blocking glycolysis with non-toxic concentrations of 2-DG completely prevented SARS-CoV–2 replication in human cells. If this is true and was proven with further studies and a larger clinical trial set up a significant achievement would be achieved in our war against COVID-19.
Despite that it is still early to judge if WP1122 is going to be effective in managing COVID, we believe that both science and current data are on its side.
